What Scanheritage Covers
The past survives in buildings, objects, landscapes and the records people kept. Scanheritage is a publication about that survival and about the people who study and protect it. We write about History, Archaeology, Heritage & Conservation and Cultural Travel for readers who enjoy learning how we know what we know.
Understanding what happened
History articles explore events, daily life and the ideas behind them, with attention to how evidence is gathered and where it is uncertain. Archaeology looks at excavation, dating, finds and interpretation, and it tries to show that discoveries are rarely tidy and often open to revision.
Looking after what remains
Heritage & Conservation considers how buildings, artefacts and sites are protected, repaired and presented, and the debates over cost, authenticity and access. Cultural Travel helps readers visit museums, monuments and historic places thoughtfully, with respect for local communities and for fragile surroundings.
Readers include students, volunteers, travellers and people who simply enjoy old things. We assume curiosity rather than prior knowledge, define specialist terms when they appear and try to credit the researchers, institutions and communities whose work makes these stories possible.
How we handle the record
We rely on published research, museum and archive material, and official heritage bodies, and we distinguish established findings from theories. Where scholars disagree, we try to say so. Articles are revisited when new work changes the story.
If you believe a fact, date or credit is wrong, please write to [email protected] with the details and a source if you have one, and we will review the page.
